The NAUI and PADI Assistant Instructor courses both aim to prepare divers for professional roles in scuba instruction, but they have some differences in their approach and structure.

PADI Assistant Instructor Course

  • Structure: Part of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), which includes the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program.
  • Focus: Emphasizes teaching techniques, dive theory, and practical skills. The AI course is designed to prepare candidates for the Instructor Examination (IE).
  • Flexibility: PADI courses are known for their structured and standardized approach, making it easier for divers to follow a clear path to certification.
  • Requirements:
    • PADI Divemaster certification
    • At least 60 logged dives to start the AI course and 100 dives to attend the IE
    • Current CPR and First Aid certification
    • Medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months

NAUI Assistant Instructor Course

  • Structure: Can be taken as a standalone course or as part of the NAUI Instructor Training Course (ITC).
  • Focus: NAUI places a strong emphasis on dive safety, problem-solving, and practical application of skills. The course includes extensive hands-on training and real-world scenarios.
  • Flexibility: NAUI courses are known for their flexibility, allowing instructors to adapt the training to the needs of the students.
  • Requirements:
    • NAUI Divemaster certification or equivalent
    • At least 60 logged dives
    • Current CPR and First Aid certification
    • Medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months

Key Differences

  • Training Approach: PADI follows a more standardized and structured approach, while NAUI offers more flexibility and emphasizes practical application and problem-solving.
  • Course Integration: PADI’s AI course is integrated into the IDC, leading directly to the Instructor Examination. NAUI’s AI course can be taken independently or as part of the ITC.
  • Emphasis: PADI focuses on preparing candidates for the IE with a clear progression path, while NAUI emphasizes safety and practical skills with more adaptable training methods.

Both courses are excellent pathways to becoming a professional dive instructor, and the choice between them often comes down to personal preference and the specific training style that suits you best.
